A chiropractic adjustment involves treating the vertebral subluxation complex; that is, correcting function at the deeper structures of the spine to allow the central and peripheral nervous systems to function more normally. Massage therapy is generally more superficial, however, can also significantly affect function and improve the nervous system.

X-rays were discovered for diagnostic purposes by Wilhelm Rontgen in 1895. X-rays are primarily used to diagnose conditions of the bones and joints of the body. Soft tissues do not show up well on x-rays. For soft tissues, other imaging techniques are available including ultrasound and MRI. But for the evaluation of bone and joint conditions, X-ray continues to be the most popular diagnostic imaging tool.

X-rays are often available at diagnostic imaging centers as well as in many physicians’ private practices. You don’t have to go the hospital to have x-rays taken. Many doctors offer x-rays as a service independent from the treatments they render. That is, you don’t necessarily have to be a patient at an office to have your x-rays taken. However, a physician’s prescription for x-rays is probably required. Laws vary from state to state. Each state makes their own determination regarding what kind of health care professionals can perform x-rays. In the absence of a prescription, most x-ray facilities will have a physician available to determine if x-rays are appropriate.

Plain film x-rays have “evolved” to digital images. But digital imaging has not replaced plain films. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Properly exposed plain films still produce more detailed images. But digital x-rays are usually a little faster and more convenient. Digital images can be easily manipulated to improve the image quality when improper exposure factors were used. Sharing and copying digital images does not reduce the image quality and the quality of the images does not degrade over time. Digital images are easier to archive and take less storage space. The digital imaging comes with a larger price tag to the physician which may drive up the costs of the images. Both plain film and digital x-ray machines expose the patient to about the same amount of radiation.

Although the plain film x-ray and digital x-ray systems both have their strong points, in the end, it should not affect the diagnosis and healthcare a person receives. Either system can produce excellent diagnostic images providing the techniques were correct and the equipment was functioning properly. In the case of films, the processing chemicals must also be fresh.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is one of the most common debilitating back problems there is. It is named after the nerve that is affected, the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the thickest nerve in the body. It exits the spine in the lowback, passes through the pelvis, and runs down the back of the thigh. Branches of the sciatic nerve continue all the way to the pinky toe. Someone diagnosed with sciatica may experience slight symptoms like a tightness in the butt or numbness in the toes or may have severe pains making it impossible to walk. In more severe cases, some of the muscles in the legs get weak. It may be difficult to stand on the toes on the involved side because of this weakness.

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica is usually caused by a vertebral subluxation complex. The vertebral subluxation complex involves one or more joints in the spine and involves them losing normal function and mobility. This is referred to as “kinesiopathology”. A vertebral subluxaton complex that causes sciatica probably also involves some degree of muscle spasms. A tight or spasmotic piriformis muscle can cause sciatica near the sciatic notch. This component of the vertebral subluxaton complex is referred to as “myopathology”. The restricted joints of the spine will cause the tissues in the area to change to some extent. They may become edematous early on and eventually become fibrotic and dehydrated. These changes in the tissue are referred to as “histopathology”. These changes can cause tension or stress on the nerve causing the nerve to work less than it is supposed to. This might be realized by pain, lack of sensation (numbness), or muscle weakness. This is called neuropathology. Because nerves go to body parts, the part they go to works less then 100%. This is known as pathophysiology.

How is Sciatica Cured?

If the vertebral subluxation complex (VSC) is the cause (and it usually is), then correction of the VSC is the cure. Chiropractors use the chiropractic “adjustment” to restore posture and function to the spine. Such a correction is usually supported with exercises. Such exercises are usually designed to improve flexibility and range of motion and encourage healing to the surrounding tissues.
